History of Poompuhar, Tamil Nadu 

Poompuhar was originally called Puhar / Kaveripattanam. This place was once an early chola dynasty major port city. This place was mentioned in the Sangam literature as a wealthy trading center. The river Kaveri flowed into the bay of bengal near this city. Unfortunately, much of the original city was submerged due to the tidal waves and erosion. Archaeological excavations have confirmed the existence of the submerged structures and artifacts off the coast of Poompuhar.
